Zero rhythm

In 1974, Marina Abramovic had an artistic performance in a modern sense. He had announced that during the 6-hour performance, he would be like a motionless object without any reaction.

During this time, the participants were allowed to do whatever they wanted with him and even use the 72 devices that Abramovich had placed on the studio table. This performance was called “Zero Rhythm”.

The following note can be seen on the table:
▪︎ Solution: There are 72 devices on the table that you can use on me as you like.
▪︎Commitment: I will be a mere object for 6 hours and take responsibility for any consequences.
▪︎ 6 hours are from 8 pm to 2 am.

○ On the table were pleasure tools such as feathers, silk handkerchiefs, flowers, water, etc., and torture tools such as: knives, razors, chains, wires… and even a loaded gun!

At the beginning of work, everyone had to face each other. Someone approached and decorated him with flowers. Another person tied him to another object with a wire. Another tickled him. A little later, they lifted him up and changed his place! Chains were used little by little. They sprayed him with water and when they saw that he did not react, the behavior became more aggressive.

Art critic Thomas McEvilly, who attended the show, recalled how people’s behavior gradually became more violent: “At first it was gentle, one turned him, another raised his arms … another touched his private parts. hit…”

A man came forward and injured his neck with a razor blade that he had picked up, and another man dragged flower thorns on Abramovich’s stomach.
Someone handed him a gun and raised his hand to the top of his temple.
Another person came and took the gun and threw it out the window.

○Abramovich showed that if the conditions are ready for people who are inclined to violence, how easily and how quickly they will use violence. After the end of 6 hours, Abramovich walked in the studio hall and passed in front of assistants and visitors.

Everyone avoided looking at his face. The visitors behaved so normally that they didn’t remember anything about the violence they used a while ago and how they enjoyed harassing and attacking him.

This work reveals a terrible thing about human existence. It clearly shows us how quickly and easily a man can harm his fellow man if the conditions are right, and how easily one can take advantage of a person who does not defend himself or fight back, and that if the ground is ready The majority of seemingly “normal” people in society can turn into truly wild and violent creatures in the blink of an eye.

Marina later announced: When she returned to her hotel that night, she saw that a lock of her hair had turned white within a few hours. His reluctance and lack of reaction had cost him such a price.

○Marina Abramović and the Zero Rhythm Experiment teach us that when you are passive, you both destroy yourself and awaken the destructive part of others. When you are passive, people become wild, they become bullies, your morals and human dignity are no longer respected by anyone, and the desires, complexes, and tumors that exist inside you find a place to express themselves and show off! Maybe it is the oppressed that makes the oppressor!
